On November 7th, 2013, at 4:00 PM at Redd’s Restaurant, 317 Washington Avenue, Carlstadt, NJ, the Metropolitan New York Coatings Association will host a Workshop on the structure and operation of PaintCare, the coatings industry subsidized program designed to manage the disposition of leftover paint. Based on the principle of Product Stewardship, the parties involved in the design, production, sale and use of a product take responsibility for minimizing the environmental impact throughout the stages of the product’s life. The program is self-sufficient and operates without state funds. A complete analysis of the program will be presented at the Workshop. A second topic of discussion at the Workshop will be the Toxic Substances Control Act. First passed in 1976, the Act now does not adequately meet the needs and requirements imposed by the advances of technology in the Coatings field. Recommendations to update and improve the Act will be developed. Supplementing the above will be a talk on the practical aspect of paint disposition and recycling effort on a grand scale with the experience of New York City and the successes and problems encountered in that effort. Among the Speakers presenting will be Alison Keane of the American Coatings Association, Stephen Wieroniey of the American Coatings Association and David Hirschler, the Director of Waste Prevention Unit of the New York City Department of Sanitation. Representatives of the MNYCA member companies are invited on a complimentary basis; all others will be charged a fee of $25.00. A reception will follow the presentations. MNYCA (www.mnyca.org) exists to promote the welfare and interests of its members within the Coatings community; to provide its members with management information and education; to disseminate technical and regulatory information; to offer opportunities for idea exchange and, through cooperation with the American Coatings Association, to promote the welfare of the industry as a whole.
